For this project there is a partnership between Virtual IT, University of Cyprus and English School.

The project name is "Εργαδίχτυο"

English School

The English School was founded in 1900 as a public school and with independence in 1960 it was handed over to the Cyprus Government. It is at present under the control of the Council of Ministers and the Board of Management is appointed directly by the President of the Republic. It is a co-educational school that has a roll of approx. 890 students in the age range of 12 to 19. It is a multicultural school serving the needs of all ethnic groups on the island.

The students are prepared for the British system of public examinations- O Level, IGCSE, AS and A Level. Over 80% of the students further their studies at British Universities. Last year 96 students entered top UK Universities. It offers the students a full range of A level subjects and the majority of them end up with 4.5 A Levels. The school' s overall A Level pass rate last year was 99.3%.

The School also offers a vast range of extracurricular activities which aim at maximizing the students' overall education. There are almost 40 clubs and societies to choose from. Many of these involve travelling abroad, to represent the School at various international events with excellent results. An example is the Debating and Public Speaking Society where our school was placed overall 7th out of 60 Schools this academic year. Our Greek Play, this year won First Prize in the Pancyprian Competition for Secondary Schools. Representatives of the students also attend the London International Youth Science Forum and the Global Young Leaders' Conference in the U.S.A.

University of Cyprus

The University of Cyprus was officially founded in 1989. Its firs students were admitted in September 1992 and presently has undergraduate student population of about 2000. Postgraduate studies started in 1996. The University has four faculties, Pure and Applied Sciences, Economics and Management, Humanities and Social Sciences and the recently formed Faculty of Letters. The University is clearly a research-oriented academic establishment. Within the framework of its scholarly contribution the academic staff of the University have published during the period 1994-95, more than 200 papers in international journals (let alone the publications in conferences, workshops, etc). Only in 1994-95, an amount of 800,000 Cyprus pounds was allocated from the University Budget in direct and indirect costs for research. There are also research programmes that operate with external funding, such as those funded by the European Union, thus strengthening the research work of the Institution.

The Department of Computer Science is one of the most active Departments of the University of Cyprus. The Department has 13 regular members of the staff, out of which 7 have a tenured rank. There are also a number of postgraduate and research students as well as a number of Research Associates. There are also a number of vacancies for additional academic staff which, when filled, will raise the Department's strength to about 25 such members.

The Department is very active in the areas of information technology and communications. Its research falls under the following areas: artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms, computational logic, knowledge engineering, multimedia information systems, electronic commerce, Internet computing, parallel and distributed algorithms, signal and image processing, software engineering, parallel and distributed architectures, multi-language multi-computers compilers, theory of distributed computation and algorithms, networking, and object-oriented databases and programming. The Department is highly research oriented: the first 9 members of its academic staff produced over 200 research publications between 1995-97 and over 160 between 1997-99, including a number of books.

The Department is currently actively participating in over 50 projects funded by various frameworks of the European Union (IST, EUMEDIS, INCO-DC, SOCRATES, LEONARDO DA VINCI, etc.) as well as other local and international sources. The overall funding is currently at the level of about 10 M. EUROs.
